According to figures published recently by the National Statistics Institute, Ibiza and Formentera received 278,380 visitors during the month of August, who spent a total of 1,783,325 nights, an increase of almost 20 per cent on the previous year. Counting all four islands, tourist establishments in the Balearics showed an occupancy figure of 89.6 per cent, the best result in the whole of the country; in fact two in three foreign tourists chose the islands to spend their holidays. The two boroughs to record the highest level of beds occupied were San José and San Antonio, with 97.2 per cent and 92.44 per cent respectively.
The good news continued through the first 15 days of September as hotel occupancy in Ibiza reached 83 per cent, almost ten points higher than the same period in 2009. The occupancy figures for Formentera were even better, reaching almost 90 per cent, the highest achieved in the last five years. Provision for the rest of the month is also favourable with the final figure expected to be higher than in 2008 or 2009.
